When trying to see why it might be difficult to live by a value, two kinds of analysis are useful:
- First, we can see if the value is being crowded outβwhether it's hard to live by the value because considerations of strategy or social pressure have become paramount. For example, it's hard to dress creatively when you are worried about fitting in at work. Or if closing a deal seems more important than being honest.
- Second, we can see if living by the value involves some hard steps which are unsupported by the environment. An example here would be if it's difficult to be honest because there's no time to think about how to phrase things, or if it's harder to be courageous when there's no one else who believes in you.
